Pinoys in Austria eager for Pacquiao-Bradley bout
MANILA, Philippines - Filipinos in Austria are preparing to watch one of the most highly anticipated bouts of the year as Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao will once again step into the ring on June 9 to defend his welterweight title against undefeated American boxer Timothy Bradley.
Larry Subido, a Pinoy boxing enthusiast in Vienna, has organized a public viewing event on June 9 at the Budo Center Sports Complex in Vienna.
"Our group is expecting more than 300 kababayans to follow the bout on big screen. Every time Pacman has a fight, we have been gathering here to show our support to his fights," Subido told ABS-CBN News.
Last year, during the public viewing of the fight of Manny Pacquiao and Sugar Shane Mosley, the group took the chance to gather financial resources to support the projects of ABS-CBN Foundation's Bantay Bata 163.
"We are very much convinced that Pacquiao would win the fight. He is the more powerful, more experienced and better overall fighter. Bradley must execute a careful and calculated strategy if he wants to survive as winner," said Edsel Angeles, a member of the Philippine Tennis Club in Austria.
Lukas Brandauer, an Austrian boxing analyst, also has a great interest in the Pacquiao-Bradley bout.
"I believe that Pac-Man will have little trouble disposing of Bradley. Manny Pacquiao is considered by most to be the quicker and more powerful boxer. I expect him to use that to his advantage in a knockout victory," Brandauer said.
Whatever the result of the fight, Filipinos in Austria are proud of their fellow Pinoy who became an icon for millions of Filipinos abroad, not only because of his boxing victories but also because of his positive traits.
"His demonstration of love and concern for the poor, which he used to be one before he became a Filipino billionaire, is indeed a great role model to all Filipino achievers," said Filipina nurse Yolly G.
The Filipino boxing icon said he is keen on helping fight poverty in the Philippines.
