MANILA, Philippines – The Bureau of Customs (BoC) is on alert for imported infant formula milk products from China after it was discovered that products from the Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group were tainted with mercury.

The company has recalled Quan You milk due to the mercury content, which if consumed may lead to paralysis, impaired vision and hearing, insomnia and affect growth.

Experts said the mercury may have been ingested by cows in China.

It is also possible that the milk’s packaging may have been contaminated with mercury.

Meanwhile, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) is investigating if Quan You milk is already being sold in the country.

The BoC has also imposed stricter rules on milk products imported from China because of the incident.
