Relocation eyed for Quezon town residents
MANILA, Philippines – The local government of Quezon province is planning a permanent relocation plan for residents living in landslide-prone areas in the town of Real.
Real Mayor Joel Diestro said authorities are considering the forced relocation of residents.
“Ang implementation dito mahirap kasi ‘yung mga tao ayaw makinig eh. Dapat forced relocation,” he said.
On a geohazard map of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, almost all of Real is marked in red, which means that almost all areas are prone to landslides.
Nonstop rains on Monday triggered another landslide in Real, leaving one unidentified person dead.
The victim’s body was found floating in a river in Barangay Tignoan, according to the Real Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC).
Landslides are not new to residents of Real. A severe landslide hit the town in 2004.
Most residents ran toward Ripador Resort for protection but it was one of the hardest hit areas, where more than 40 people were killed.
Among the survivors were Maria Tamares, her then 3-year-old granddaughter Ella Sor and two young boys.
They were rescued after being buried under the rubble for 10 days. Eleven of their relatives perished in the tragedy.
“Kami kapag naiyak sasabihin ng apo ko, ‘Lola, huwag na kayo umiyak, ‘di tayo mamamatay,” said Tamares.
A monument was erected in front of the building where they were rescued in remembrance of the heroes who saved their lives.
But today, the monument merely serves as a clothesline. -- Reports from Jenny Reyes, ABS-CBN News; ANC; dzMM
