5 areas under Signal No. 1 due to 'Gener'

MANILA, Philippines – The state weather bureau has placed 5 areas in Northern Luzon under Signal No. 1 as tropical storm “Gener” (international name: Saolo) continues to move in a north northwest direction.

In its latest weather bulletin on Saturday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Gener was last spotted 250 kilometers (km) northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, prompting the bureau to hoist storm signal warnings over the following areas:

• Isabela
• Cagayan
• Calayan Group of Islands
• Babuyan Group of Islands
• Batanes Group of Islands

PAGASA said the storm is packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph

It is expected to be 290 km northeast of Casiguran, Aurora by Sunday afternoon and 130 km northeast of Basso, Batanes by Monday afternoon.

Heavy to intense rainfall is expected within the 500 km diameter of the storm.

The storm is also expected to enhance the Southwest Monsoon that will bring rains over Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao especially the western section.
