Arum: No preference on Pacquiao's opponent

MANILA, Philippines -- Top Rank chief executive officer Bob Arum has no preference on who should be the next opponent for Filipino boxing icon Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao.

Arum will go to the Philippines this weekend, where he is scheduled to meet with Pacquiao and discuss the boxer's next fight. Pacquiao is expected to choose from a short-list of four opponents: Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Timothy Bradley Jr. and Lamont Peterson.

Manny Pacquiao defeated Miguel Cotto when they fought in 2009.

For Arum, each fighter has his advantages and disadvantages, but it will be up to Pacquiao to decide.

"I'll explain all the scenarios to Manny, but I don't care. I'm Switzerland," Arum told ESPN's Dan Rafael. "I'll present the opponents and we'll discuss it, but Manny makes his own decision."

Arum admitted that if did have a preference, Pacquiao will most likely agree with him.

"If I was leaning a particular way and I told Manny, he would probably do it because that's the kind of guy he is," he said.

Rematches

Arum is confident he will be able to sell a fourth fight between Pacquiao and Marquez because the two boxers' previous three fights were all close.

"This fight would be another intriguing, close fight and have a built in audience, particularly the Hispanic fans who believe that Marquez won that fight (on November 12) and was robbed of the decision," Arum said.

A potential problem for Arum is Marquez's free-agent status, as Top Rank does not have the Mexican fighter under contract.

Meanwhile, a rematch between Pacquiao and Cotto will also mean big business for Arum.

"Cotto... he has the biggest fan base with the Puerto Rican numbers he delivers, and he's the biggest name of the four," Arum said. "Also, people remember that the first four rounds of his fight with Manny were hellacious."

"You an sell it based on the fact that yeah, Manny beat the old Cotto, but the new Cotto is a problem and they would be fighting at a higher weight."

A Pacquiao-Cotto rematch will have to be held at a catchweight, Arum said.

Not so popular

Lamont Peterson defeated Amir Khan last December, but he has never headlined a pay-per-view card.

Bradley and Peterson are also being considered as possible opponents, but they are not as popular as Marquez and Cotto. Bradley has never been the main event in a pay-per-view card; his last bout was in the undercard of Pacquiao-Marquez III.

Peterson has not headlined a pay-per-view either; moreover, he was thoroughly outclassed by Bradley when they fought in 2009.

If Pacquiao chooses to fight Bradley, Arum said it will surely be a competitive fight.

"Bradley is undefeated (28-0, 12 knockouts), he's considered a tough out, and for those looking at the most competitive fight, Bradley would be considered more competitive with Pacquiao than Peterson might be," he said.

"But on the other hand, you have Peterson coming off this fight with (Amir) Khan that had a lot of publicity and it was a terrific fight," Arum added.

Peterson won a pair of light welterweight belts after defeating Pacquiao's stable mate, Amir Khan, via a split decision last December.

In a recent interview with ABS-CBN, Pacquiao said he is considering a fourth bout against Marquez, but will still have to discuss the revenue split with Arum.
