Arum: Pacquiao just needs to maintain focus
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing promoter Bob Arum maintained that Manny Pacquiao is not yet past his peak, despite the boxer’s relatively lackluster performances against Shane Mosley and Juan Manuel Marquez in 2011.
Arum, who is due to meet Pacquiao next week, said the 8-division champion would only need to set his priorities straight to get back into the game.
"No, I don't think he's slipping at all," Arum said in Boxing Scene. "I think the problem was that he has to maintain his focus on the boxing and not let any of the outside stuff affect him."
Pundits suspect that Pacquiao's commitments outside boxing is affecting his performance in the ring.
Aside from serving as a congressman for Sarangani province, he also plays host for a local TV game show.
Pacquiao fought and defeated Mosley by unanimous decision last May. But despite dominating Mosley, he failed to finish off the aging boxer.
Last November, Pacquiao was nearly upset by Marquez during their third face-off. He escaped the Mexican boxer by hammering a majority decision.
Last say
Aside from a fourth bout against Marquez, Pacquiao will be offered by Arum possible fights against Miguel Cotto, Timothy Bradley and Lamont Peterson.
"We are researching all of that, all four guys," Arum said. "We have asked HBO for their opinion, and I will present it all to Manny and then we will have a decision."
Arum said Pacquiao will have the last say on his choice of opponent.
"I want it to be his decision. He's mature enough and knowledgeable enough about boxing to make the choice himself. I'm just going to lay out the facts," he said.
