Arum still hoping for Pacquiao-Mayweather fight
MANILA, Philippines -- Top Rank chief executive officer Bob Arum is still hoping to make the much-awaited mega-fight between Filipino boxing icon Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao and undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.
This, despite Mayweather being sentenced to 90 days in jail following a guilty plea to a 2010 domestic violence charge.
Arum told ESPN's Dan Rafael that he is still expecting to put the mega-fight together once Mayweather becomes available--but this will not happen in the first half of 2012.
"You can't expect Floyd, after having been in prison, to come out and go right into a big fight," Arum said. "He won't be available to train or promote a fight in May or June."
Arum believes Mayweather will want to have a tune-up fight first before considering a bout with Pacquiao. The mega-fight can thus be held on November 2012 at the earliest.
"We still have not been told by Floyd who we should sit down with to hammer everything out," Arum said.
Pity for Floyd
The Top Rank boss admitted that he feels sorry for Mayweather, whom he promoted early in the fighter's career.
"I really feel sad for him. You feel sorry for the guy," Arum said. "I know what he did was totally unacceptable in society, but you can still feel sorry for him."
Arum is hoping that Mayweather will not get into anymore trouble while incarcerated.
"I just hope he swallows his ego and doesn't get into trouble when he is in jail, because then, the incarceration can go not only the full 90 days, but he could have the 90 days added on," he said.
"You know they're not looking to do him any favors in jail."
Mayweather has been instructed to report to the Clark County Detention Center on January 6.
