San Sebastian beats Arellano in close game
MANILA – Jamil Ortuoste scored 28 points to steer the San Sebastian Stags past the Arellano University Chiefs, 78-76, in the 89th NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on Thursday.
The Chiefs were up by one, 61-60, early in the fourth period when Ortuoste sparked a 9-0 run to push the Stags ahead, 69-61.
Arellano recovered via an 11-3 rally, but it wasn’t enough to overcome San Sebastian, which won its first game against one defeat.
Ortuoste, who was already with San Sebastian since his juniors days, received plenty of help from his team mates.
Leo de Vera scored 15 points for the Stags, while Bradwyn Guinto, CJ Perez and Jovit de la Cruz each had 10 points.
Prince Caperal and Levi Hernandez paced Arellano with 11 points each. Keith Agovida and John Pinto combined for 20.
In the other game, the Perpetual Help Atlas routed Emilio Aguinaldo College, 68-49, for a breakout opening in the tournament.
Nosa Omorogbe and Earl Thompson led the way for Perpetual by scoring 14 points each.
Harold Arboleda had a double-double performance for the Altas with 10 points and 13 boards.
