Religious activities distract Pacquiao, Salud says
MANILA, Philippines – Whoever Manny Pacquiao fights next, he will have to pour in every ounce of concentration in his training, a Filipino boxing promoter said.
Wakee Salud told Philboxing’s Eddie Alinea that Pacquiao’s religious activities affected his training for the Timothy Bradley fight last June.
“Ang sinasabi ko lang, kahit sino ang makalaban, dapat maganda ang kondisyon ni Manny. He should totally detach himself from whatever kind of distraction,” Salud said.
Shortly before the Bradley fight, Pacquiao underwent “faith renewal” by becoming a Bible preacher.
Salud said his preaching time affected Pacquiao’s rest period.
He suspects that it could be the culprit for the fighting congressman’s loss to Bradley.
“Distraction pa rin kasi yun eh.Pag-memorize lang ng Bible consumes most of his time. Tapos me preaching pa that normally lasts up to the wee hours the next day,” said Salud.
“Sana ‘yung mga spiritual adviser n’ya ma-realize that boxing is Manny’s profession, his bread and butter. ‘Pag walang laban, okey yun.”
With regard to Pacquiao's choice of opponents, Salud said Juan Manuel Marquez might be the wise choice from a business standpoint.
But he said Marquez is a risky bout for the Filipino champion when a future super fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. is in consideration.
“May risk kapag si Marquez ang napili. Kasi baka matalo at kapag natalo, the planned mega-fight against Mayweather, baka mabura na din,” Salud said.
