Creating special lanes for motorcycles won't solve the problem!
By creating a special lane for motorcycles is good but not good enough and it wouldn’t solve the problem. Let me explain. Based on those CCTV video clips and upon my own experience in Metro Manila traffic, the main issue is the lack of knowledge and respect of the traffic rules and regulations and road courtesy. Many driver’s just don’t have it. If they do, no one’s applying it. Worse of all, no one’s enforcing it consistently! It’s the “rule of the jungle” out there! How many driver’s out there are driving under the influence of alcohol (or even drugs)? Most driver’s are driving aggressively instead of defensively. Everyone’s in a hurry. Everyone claims to have the right of way! I’m not just talking about drivers operating motorcycles but even those driving busses, jeepneys, taxis and even privately owned vehicles. Everyone wants to be “king of the road”.
Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag of the DOH is calling upon motorcycle operators not to use ”substandard” helmets. Yes, a helmet can protect your head, but what’s more important is what’s inside your head – knowledge and applying it! It doesn’t matter if you have the best helmet available in the market today and drive on a special motorcycle lane, but if you don’t follow the rule and run a red light and then get’s hit by an accelerating bus – YOU’RE DEAD MEAT!!! Your top-of-the-line helmet and your special lane won’t save you!
Most drivers do have a driver’s license to operate a vehicle. They have the skill in operating a vehicle but definitely lack the knowledge in traffic rules and road courtesy. In a modern world, these two must go hand in hand. Traffic enforcers must be consistent in enforcing the law and most of all, our system in acquiring a driver’s license must change so that the new generation of drivers will be better.
Study shows that a crash at 90 km/h corresponds to a fall from the tenth floor of a building. The risk of being killed in an accident increases to more than double if you drive 110 km/h instead of 90 km/h. The risk of death to pedestrians is small if it is hit at 30 km/h, only one in ten is killed. At 50 km/h the risk significantly increases, eight of ten are killed. An accident can be caused by various factors, but speed is crucial in determining how serious the consequences of a traffic accident may be. If you drive 100 km/h in a 10 km road that is signposted with 90 km/h, you win only about 40 seconds. In 100 km, you have saved just under seven minutes. At the same time, you have more than doubled the risk of death if an accident happens. You have also increased fuel costs and your carbon emissions.
So for everyone’s safety, let’s apply traffic rules and road courtesy. Let’s just slow down a bit and drive defensively! You and I will get to our destination eventually. Better be late than never! As for motorcycle lanes, it’s like applying band aid to an open wound. But still, better than nothing at all!
