UAAP: UST stuns NU, Ateneo thwarts La Salle
MANILA, Philippines – The UST Growling Tigers exploded in crunch time to rally past the NU Bulldogs, 77-71, in the UAAP Season 75 Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Tigers were down 63-53 early in the fourth period, but were able to cut the lead. Point guard Jeric Fortuna wrapped up the victory with a three-point play with about a minute to go in the game.
With the loss, the Bulldogs suffered their second straight defeat afte getting blown out by the Ateneo Blue Eagles last week.
Meanwhile, the defending champion Blue Eagles weathered a huge third quarter fightback by archrivals De La Salle Green Archers, for a 71-61 win in their first encounter in Season 75.
Ateneo worked around La Salle’s twin towers by sending its smaller but faster players near the basket, with last season’s Rookie of the Year Kiefer Ravena finishing with 16 points and four rebounds for the Blue Eagles.
Greg Slaughter led the Ateneans in scoring with 20 points and seven rebounds.
With the win, Ateneo avenged its 62-59 loss to La Salle in the pre-season and moved to solo second with a 3-1 slate behind league leading FEU. -- ANC, July 29, 2012.
